Loneliness at work: strengthening connection in the team

Loneliness is rarely visible at work: someone is there, works, leaves again. People who work remotely a lot, on shifts or are new often have hardly any contact beyond their tasks. This guide relies on small, fixed formats in everyday working life instead of rare large events. It runs all year.

Which formats help?

Shared breaks at a fixed time, get-to-know-you tandems across teams, a buddy for everyone who is new. It is important that employees in field work, on shifts or working from home can also take part. Choose two or three formats and keep the dates reliably, even if only a few people come one time.

What can managers do?

Regularly check in briefly and personally, with everyone in the team, not only about tasks. This is not a control conversation but contact. Actively invite new employees instead of waiting for them to come.

How do you notice whether it works?

Ask anonymously before the start and after three months: how included do you feel in the team? Keep the formats that are taken up. Taking part remains voluntary; you will find providers for team formats in the marketplace.

How do you put the measure in place?

  1. 1
Choose two or three fixed formats: shared break, get-to-know-you tandems, arrival plan for new employees
  2. 2
Name one person per format who keeps it going
  3. 3
Managers hold regular short personal conversations, also with remote employees
  4. 4
After three months, ask anonymously how included employees feel

Tax and health insurance: what is possible

Employer health benefits can be tax-free under § 3 no. 34 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) up to €600 per employee per year — if they are provided in addition to the salary already owed and are either certified (§ 20 SGB V) or implemented within the company's health promotion process. Gym memberships and corporate fitness are not covered. For ZPP-certified courses (e.g. from Upfit), German statutory health insurers can reimburse all or part of the course fee to their insured members — then only the amount exceeding that reimbursement is tax-free. Projects within the company can be funded under § 20b SGB V, with no entitlement. Only your tax adviser can confirm the tax exemption.
